African Pottery Workshop

2 weekends in June - June 2 noon-6pm; June 3 noon-2pm; June 16 noon-3pm; June 17 6-7pm

A pot is not always simply a pot. Pots are vessels whose role is to contain, and across the continent of Africa this is the foundation for rich metaphors and myths. African pots lend themselves to language and models of thinking. They are often equated with the Earth, conception, life transitions, or they may provide a locus for spiritual essences. Pottery has deep symbolic meaning in the myths and rituals that are an integral part of everyday tribal life. Learn to create large, round, exotic, textured clay vessels in this weekend workshop. Rotate, orbit, coil, paddle, mold, and layer, in the primordial traditions of tribal African pottery making. Using natural tools and rhythmic methods, this class is dedicated to robust, round pots.

This workshop is a fine complement to those who have been working on the wheel, or who enjoy traditional hand building. However, no previous clay experience is necessary to attend this workshop.
