General Pool Rules and Policies
- The lifeguard is to be obeyed at all times.
- Swim only when there is a lifeguard on duty. Children up to 13 years old need to be accompanied by an adult. It is recommended that inexperienced swimmers use flotation devices such as lifejackets, under the direct supervision of an adult.
- Swimmers younger than 18 will need to pass the American Red Cross Water Competency swim test to be unaccompanied by an adult in the water. (0–12-year-olds an adult will need to remain on the pool deck).
- Showers are required by State Law. Appropriate swim attire required in all pools (no blue jeans or cut-off shorts). Please apply sunscreen 15 minutes prior to entering the pool.
- Children who are not potty trained must wear a reusable swim diaper.
- No Diving. Enter feet-first only.
- No Breath Holding.
- No Running. No Roughhousing on the pool deck.
- Do not play, sit, or hang on ladder railings, guard stands, the ramp, and lane ropes. Use all swimming equipment appropriately.
- Do not ride on the shoulders, throw kids, or participate in other potentially unsafe activities. Any use of toys, including inflatables, is at the discretion of the lifeguard.
- Food or drinks are allowed in the grass area only. No food or drinks are allowed on the pool deck except for bottled water. Please help keep the facility clean by using the trash barrels. No glassware is allowed anywhere in or around the pool. No alcohol is permitted anywhere in the aquatic complex.
- Lounge chairs may not be in front of/over the pool drain.
- Changing is permitted in the locker rooms/bathrooms only.
- No one is allowed in the pool who has a communicable disease, open sores (including scabs from chickenpox), or an open wound.
- Two lap lanes will be open during swimming lessons and family recreation time and are for lap swimming only. Lap Lanes are reservation only and are capped at two swimmers.
- Do not interrupt swim classes while they are in session.
- No spitting and/or blowing your nose in the pool.
- Read and obey all pool rules and posted signs in the pool area.
JCC Aquatics Safe Swimmer Policy
0–5-year-old Swimmers: Parent/Caregiver must be in the water and within arms reach of the child at all times. Young Swimmers are advised to be in flotation devices such as lifejackets, under the direct supervision of an adult.
6–12-year-old Swimmers: The swimmer must pass the American Red Cross Water Competency Swim Test for both Therapy and/or Lap pool to be without a guardian in that pool. A Parent/Caregiver will need to remain on the pool deck. Swimmers who do not pass will need to remain within arm’s reach of a Parent/Guardian for the pool that they did not meet water competency for.
13–18-year-old Swimmers: The swimmer must pass the American Red Cross Water Competency Swim Test for both Therapy and/or Lap pool to be without a guardian at the Aquatic Complex. Swimmers who do not pass will need to remain within arm’s reach of a Parent/Guardian for the pool that they did not meet water competency for.
*This is a yearly test. A log will be kept (pass date, swimmer’s name, date of birth, emergency contact info, and family name)
American Red Cross Water Comptency Swim Test (6-18 years old):
Lap Pool Swim Test:
- Step or jump into the water over your head.
- Return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute.
- Turn around in a full circle and find an exit.
- Swim 25 yards to the exit.
- Exit from the water. If in a pool, be able to exit without using the ladder.
Pass: Red Band for Wrist
Therapy Pool Swim Test:
- Step or jump into the water over your head.
- Return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute.
- Turn around in a full circle and find an exit.
- Swim 15 yards to the exit.
- Exit from the water. If in a pool, be able to exit without using the ladder.
